Today I complete the English translation of the Devacurse core set rules by explaining the Knot Zone.  Unlike the other zones in Devacurse, this zone isn’t a physical space on the table, but rather a mental space for resolving Event card and Skill / Ability-based flashes and reactions.  Sounds confusing?  It’s actually dead simple.  For experienced CCG / TCG players, the Knot Zone will be second nature.  For new ones, it’s as easy as counting backwards.  

In Devacurse, basic set-up and combat generally proceed according to “order”, with a clear linear sequence between which player goes first, and which goes second.  But when players start using Skills, Abilities, or Events to influence the outcome of combat, things start to become more complicated.  The Knot Zone is all about resolving such interactions in a straightforward manner.  The basic rule is very simple:  The last card played is resolved first, and so on proceeding backwards until all cards are accounted for and the outcome is determined.  This is called the “Knot Zone” because, like a series of knots tied in a rope, the last knot has to be untangled first, and so on in reverse order before the rope can be completely untangled.

Let’s consider this example from the Devacurse website.  Player 1 plays the Event card Chatugungo, summoning a fiery Vampire bat to attack Player 2′s Soldier unit, Vane, a human Taminn archer.

Chatugungo deals 2 points of damage to its target, and Vane has a weak defense of 1.  Since 1 is less than 2, Chatugungo should destroy Vane and send her to her owner’s Cenotaph.

However, Player 2 now plays his own Event card, Niyateti:

Niyateti grants a target soldier +1 AT / and +2 DF.  With Niyateti, Player 2 can raise Vane’s DF from 1 to 3.  Since Vane’s new DF of 3 > than Chatugungo’s attack of 2, Vane would now survive.

So, which event is resolved first?  Chatugungo (meaning Vane would die) or Niyateti (meaning Vane would live?)

Niyateti.  Remember, the basic rule of the Knot Zone is that the last effect played is resolved first, and so on in reverse order.  Therefore Player 2′s defensive spell protects Vane BEFORE Chatugungo’s attack hits her, and she survives this time.  

Easy, yes?

Vengeful Kindred is the first expansion set for Devacurse.  If anything, it is even more beautiful than the first release, Half-Blood Deal.  English translations of all the cards included in this set, as well as all the promos released with it, are listed below by order of card collector’s number.

What’s the difference between an ability and a skill?

An ability is an automatic action that activates itself during the normal course of game events.

A skill is an action that needs to be activated, either by depleting the card in question, paying a blessing cost, or doing something else as the card directs.

Read on for full explanations of all of the skills and abilities currently available to players of Devacurse.

Half-Blood Deal cards introduced the following skills and abilities:

Pierce:  When a Soldier or Hero blocks an attack from this card, any unblocked damage is subtracted from their Deva’s Faith Points.  (Example:  A card with Pierce and AT 4 is blocked by a Soldier with DF 2.  The Soldier takes 2 damage and is killed, the remaining 2 damage is subtracted from the Deva’s Faith Points.)

Field:  Field is always used in conjunction with a specific element, designated on the card by the symbol following the Field keyword.  A card with the Field ability may not be blocked except by Soldiers or Heroes with the same Field element ability.  (Example:  A card with Field: Wind can only be blocked by Soldiers or Heroes who also have Field: Wind).  

Revive:  A Soldier or Hero with the Revive ability is not sent to the Cenotaph / Black Hole when it is slain, but put in the rest position.  

Poison:  When a Soldier or Hero with the Poison ability inflicts damage on an enemy Soldier or Hero, that Soldier or Hero receives X amount of Poison counters, with X being equal to the amount of damage received.  As the card above illustrates, Poison can also be inflicted by certain Event cards, and some Soldier and Hero cards can “spit” Poison, depleting or paying a blessing cost and then placing one or more Poison counters on the targeted enemy.  The poisoned Soldier or Hero may not prompt during the Prompt Mode Loop, remaining in the rest position.  Instead, their Deva may remove one Poison counter from them during every Prompt Mode Loop.  When all Poison counters are gone, the Soldier or Hero may enter prompt mode during the next Prompt Mode Loop.

Windwalk:  Only Heroes may have this ability.  Ordinarily, a Hero may not attack an enemy Hero if any enemy Soldiers remain on the battlefield – they have to be targeted and removed first.  A Hero with Windwalk does not need to clear enemy soldiers before he can attack an enemy Hero – he “flies over” them.

Burn X:  When a Hero or Soldier with the Burn ability inflicts damage on an enemy Hero or Soldier, that enemy’s Deva must deplete X number of cards.  (The number X represents is printed after the Burn keyword.)  The depleted cards produce blessings.  If the enemy Deva cannot spend those blessings by the end of the turn, they must subtract them from their Faith points.  

The Vengeful Kindred expansion added these abilities to Devacurse:

Pounce:  A Soldier or Hero with Pounce does not need to be called during the Soldier / Hero calling phase.  Instead, they may be played at any time, as a flash.

Transform:  By paying a given blessing cost, a card with Transform may be turned into a different card type.  The most common examples are Inventions that may function as either independent Soldiers or as equipment that augments other Soldiers.

Flip:  Flip indicates a supplemental power that may only be activated if the card with the Flip keyword was played from a closed prayer (closed prayers begin face down, hence the “flip” when a player turns them over and brings them into play) in the temple zone, not from a player’s hand.

Curse X:  A Curse is essentially a sort of countdown.  A card with a Curse upon it receives one Curse counter every prompt mode loop.  When the Curse counter reaches X, the predetermined number printed after the Curse keyword, the curse will take effect.  Upon activation follow the instructions for the specific curse on the card, and remove all curse counters from that card.  Curses may trigger effects that are beneficial or detrimental for their owner Deva.  Most confer some advantage on their owner, but sometimes a detrimental Curse serves to counterbalance a powerful card.  

Taba (Focus) counters:  Taba counters are not Skills or Abilities, but markers used to keep track of them and their effects.  Many cards will instruct you to place Taba counters on them or their targets to measure the duration of an effect they initiate.  You can use anything to represent a Taba counter – coins, beads, plastic dinosaurs – it’s up to you.  ”Taba” means concentration, or focusing your mental energy.  So you could translate these as “Focus counters”, representations of the mental energies being used by the Devas as they wield their magic and direct their minions.

As of the time of this writing, these are all the special abilities and skills that are available to Devacurse players.  I have little doubt that future expansions will introduce more, and this website will endeavor to chronicle them when they appear.

This post focuses on the second half of the turn spiral, covering Soldier Calling, Hero Guardian Setting, Soldier Combat, Hero Combat, Refresh, and End of Turn.

This is the second of two columns that explain the turn spiral, or the sequence of a single round of play in Devacurse.  If you haven’t read the first column yet, do so, then return here.  This article continues where the first left off and explains all remaining loops (phases) of the game:  calling (summoning) soldiers and heroes, soldier and hero combat, the refresh phase, and ending the round.

III.  The Construction Loop (Phase) part II – Summoning your forces

The previous column explained the first sub-phase of the Construction Loop, setting cards as prayers in your temple zone and using those prayer cards to generate blessings.  Blessings are used for three purposes in Devacurse:  to summon soldiers to the battlefield, to use event cards, and to activate some skills and abilities.  

A.  Soldier calling (summoning)

Devacurse is a game of apocalyptic warfare.  During the soldier calling subphase you put your forces into the field and prepare for battle.

The player who has “order” (who goes first) during this turn spiral begins.

This player depletes (rotates) his / her prayer cards in the temple zone to generate enough blessings to pay the blessing cost(s) of the soldier card(s) he / she wants to put in the battlefield.  These soldier cards must be drawn either from the player’s hand or from prompt (vertical) closed (face down) prayer cards in the temple zone.  See the previous column on soldier and hero cards for more about blessing costs and the previous article on the turn spiral for more on closed prayers.

The arena encompasses the entire playing field, including the 2 soldier lines that meet in the center, the 2 hero lines behind them, and the 2 temple zones in front of each player where blessings are generated.  The battlefield is a sub-zone of the arena, encompassing only the combat-oriented 2 Soldier lines and 2 hero lines, not the prayer-oriented temple zones.  Summoned soldiers are placed within their controlling Deva’s soldier line of the battlefield, immediately opposite the opponent Deva’s soldier line.

After placing his / her soldiers, the acting player may use event cards to equip them or bolster their strength with technology (inventions, equipment) or magic (incantations).  

Location events are played and kept in the controlling player’s temple zone, where they remain until destroyed, or until their time (indicated by a number in the lower right-hand corner) runs out.  Equipment event cards are played on individual soldiers or heroes, as per their card text.  The player’s opponent may not use effect cards during this time, except for flash “!” events.  See the previous column on event cards for more information on events.

Once the acting player has finished, the opposing player repeats the steps above.

B.  Hero Guardian Setting (Hero summoning):

The player with “order” (who goes first) during this turn spiral now calls heroes to their hero line in the battlefield.

Hero summoning is very different from soldier calling.  Since heroes can only be summoned using cards in the Cenotaph discard pile, no player will able to summon heroes during the first turn spiral.  You need to have “slain” or used cards in order to call a hero.  Think of it as the equivalent of summoning a fighter from legend using the dead souls of his comrades.

Heroes are always summoned at level 1.  On the turn spiral after they are summoned, heroes may be upgraded to level two.  Read more about upgrading heroes in the previous article on soldier and hero cards.

After the acting player has called heroes to the hero line, he / she may use event cards to equip his soldiers and heroes or bolster their strength with technology (inventions, equipment) or magic (incantations).  Location events are played and kept in the controlling player’s temple zone, where they remain until destroyed.  Equipment event cards are played on individual soldiers or heroes, as per their card text.  The player’s opponent may not use effect cards during this time, except for flash “!” events.    See the previous column on event cards for more information. 

Once the acting player has finished, “order” is given to the opposing player and he / she repeats the steps above. 

Once both players have finished setting up their soldier and hero forces, it is time for battle!

IV.  The Assault Loop

As the title suggests, during this loop soldiers and heroes clash in epic combat.  Eliminating enemy soldiers is good, but the ultimate objective is to inflict direct damage on your opponent Deva’s Faith points.  Reduce these to zero and you have won the game.

A.  Soldier combat

Soldiers always fight first, heroes always fight second.

The player with order goes first.  He / she commits whatever soldiers they wish to attack by depleting those soldier cards.  Be warned – soldier cards that are depleted will be unable to block an opponent’s counter-attack later this turn.  A player may choose not to attack if they wish, in which case “order” passes to their opponent, who begins his / her soldier combat phase.

The opposing Deva may assign soldier or Hero cards to block the acting Deva’s attack by depleting as many of their hero / soldier cards as he / she wishes.  The defending Deva will assign which blocker faces which attacking soldier.  In the soldier combat phase, battle is not only man to man:  your opponent may assign more than one soldier or hero to block one of your attacking soldiers.  

The defending player may choose not to assign any blockers, or they may be unable to block.  If they do not block, the attacking player’s soldiers will assault their Deva directly, doing the cards’ full AT in damage to the defending player’s Faith points.  Remember, if a player’s Faith points reach zero, they lose the game.

To resolve combat, subtract the attacker’s AT (attack strength) from the defending card’s DF (defense).  If the Attacker’s AT is > or = to the defender’s DF (i.e., DF-AT = 0 or less), the defending soldier is killed.  Send the slain defender card to it’s owner’s cenotaph.  Unless the attacker has a special skill or ability like Pierce, a negative DF – AT score is the same as a zero – all damage inflicted is contained to the soldiers / heroes involved directly in this battle.

If a hero blocks an attacker, that hero will automatically lose as many AP (Avatar points) as the attacker has AT.  Resolve battle by subtracting the attacking player’s AT from the defending hero’s AP.  If the hero’s AP reaches zero, this hero is slain.  Send him to his owner’s black hole and subtract the hero’s maximum AP from his owner’s Faith Points.  If the hero survives, place damage counters on him that represent the number of AP points he has lost in combat.

Once all combat is resolved, the opposing player repeats the steps above, attacking with his soldiers.  The player who attacked first is now defending, and he / she may now assign any of their soldiers still in the prompt (vertical) position to block.

This metal-aligned flash event allows you to destroy one of your opponent's soldier cards, sending it immediately to his / her Cenotaph pile. A simple but potentially critical effect when played in the midst of a close battle.

Either player may use flash (!) events during this phase to influence combat.

B.  Hero Combat

The player with “order” (who goes first during this turn spiral) commits the hero(es) he / she wishes to attack by depleting them (rotating them horizontal).  A player may choose not to attack, 

The opponent assigns soldier(s) or hero(es) to block by depleting them.  Soldiers and heroes that were already used to block during the soldier combat round have been depleted and may not block during the hero combat round.  

The defending player may choose not to assign any blockers, or they may be unable to block.  If they do not block, the attacking player’s heroes will assault their Deva directly, doing the cards’ full AT in damage to the defending player’s Faith points.  Remember, if a player’s Faith points reach zero, they lose the game.

Heroes, unlike soldiers, are direct incarnations of their patron Devas, manifesting their will on the battlefield.  Their tactical intelligence reflects this divine connection:  the controlling player, not the opposing player, chooses which hero to assign to which blocker.  Because of this, heroes never fight more than one blocker, and combat is “man to man”.  However, the reverse is not true:  the attacking Deva may assign two attacking heroes to a single blocker.

There is one important limit to whom a hero can choose to fight:  in order to pit a hero against another hero, the attacking player will have to fight through their opponent’s soldiers first.  Simply put, a hero cannot attack an opponent’s hero if any prompt (vertical) enemy soldiers remain on the battlefield.  Heroes must clear the opponent’s soldiers first before they can attack his / her heroes.  

If the attacking hero’s attack strength is greater than or equal to a blocking soldier’s defense value, that soldier card is destroyed and sent to it’s owner’s cenotaph.  If not, the soldier card absorbs the damage and remains.  The attack is blocked.  If the attacking hero’s attack strength is greater than or equal to a blocking hero’s Avatar points, that hero is destroyed and sent to the opposing player’s black hole.  If not, the hero card absorbs the damage and remains.  Place as many damage counters on the blocking hero as the attacking hero inflicted on their AP (Defender’s AP – Attacker’s AT).  

Once the player with “order” is finished, the opposing player uses his heroes to attack back.  Repeat the steps above.  Or, if the opposing player has no heroes or chooses not to use them to attack, proceed to the next loop below.  

Either player may use flash (!) events during this phase to influence combat.

V.  Refresh phase:

All soldier cards that sustained damage in combat but were not destroyed are now restored to full health.  

Heroes are not restored to full health, but heroes in the prompt (vertical) position (i.e., heroes that did not participate in combat during this turn spiral) can heal 1 AP, up to the heroes’ full AP.  If a hero does this, remove one damage counter.

VI.  End of turn:

You can use flash (!) events before this turn ends.

Return to the prompt mode, and begin the Turn Spiral again.  (see “The Turn Spiral, Part One” on this site.)

All blessings generated during this round are exhausted – blessings are not cumulative across turn spirals, and do not carry over to the next one.  If a player has generated more blessings than they used, they now subtract those remaining blessings from their Faith points.

Faith points do not reset from one turn spiral to the next.  Lost faith points are cumulative from the beginning of the game until its conclusion.

Continue cycling through turn spirals in this fashion until one player loses all Faith points or runs out of cards in their Universe deck. That player loses the game.

This post is the first of two that explain the turn spiral, or round, detailing the sequence of play in Devacurse.  Important concepts like order of play, prayer, and blessings are also clarified.  

The turn spiral is the core of the game, so understanding it is crucial to playing Devacurse.  The turn spiral rules may look complicated at first glance, and indeed they aren’t simple.  But take heart – the structure of play is logical and easy to follow.  

So read on, and lets get ready to play!

What is a Turn Spiral?

Simply put, a turn spiral constitutes a single round of play.  Devacurse uses the term “turn spiral” rather than round because of the nature of play:  each player will take turns in an alternating pattern that, when diagrammed (see the flowchart above), resembles a spiral.  If you get confused, just remember that one turn spiral = one round of play.

Understanding the turn spiral sequence, i.e. the order of play, is crucial.  This section will take you step-by-step through each phase of the turn spiral.  In Devacurse, phases are called “loops”.  

I. Prompt Mode Loop

If this is the first turn spiral of the game (i.e., if this is the beginning of the game), skip this loop and proceed to the Draw Loop (below).  

If this is not the first turn spiral, all depleted (at rest, horizontal) cards may be prompted (returned to a vertical position).  Each player does this simultaneously.  

Note:  In certain cases special effects, such as poisoning, may prevent cards from being prompted.  See the forthcoming skills / abilities column for more information on poison and its effects.

II.  Draw Loop

The Draw Loop, like the Prompt Mode Loop, is performed simultaneously by both players.  

A.  The first turn spiral, i.e., starting the game (if this is not the first turn spiral, skip to B below):

Both players draw 5 cards from their universes into their hands.  

Each player reviews their 5 cards, and decides whether to keep them all or reshuffle them all back into the universe deck and draw another five. 

If a player chooses to reshuffle their cards and draw again, they must discard and reshuffle all 5 cards.  Players cannot discard and reshuffle fewer than five cards (for example, you can’t keep two cards and redraw three.)

Why would you want to discard and reshuffle your hand and redraw another five cards?  This rule is designed to mitigate unlucky draws that would otherwise stifle a player from the beginning, such as:

1.  a player draws all hero cards, which cannot be used as prayer cards.

2.  a player draws multiple copies of the same card.

After a player has drawn and kept five cards, he / she draws 2 more cards into his / her hand, for a total of seven cards.  Proceed to the construction loop.

B.  During normal turns (i.e., not the first turn spiral of the game), each player must draw at least one card, and may draw a maximum of two.   

At the end of the draw phase, each player checks the number of cards in their hand.  Players can have no more than 7 cards.  If a player has more than 7 cards in their hand, they can discard cards to the cenotaph to reduce the number to 7 or less.

III.  The Construction Loop

A.  Determine the order of play.

Players randomly determine who will go first.  Do this any way you like (rock, paper, scissors, flip a coin, etc.)

The player who goes first will go first during every loop and subphase of this turn spiral.  This includes praying, summoning soldiers and heroes, and attacking with soldiers and heroes.  In Devacurse, the player who goes first is said to have “order”, or initiative.

Once this turn spiral is completed, “order” will revert to the other player, who will go first during every loop and subphase of the next turn spiral.  Initiative will alternate back and forth in this fashion every turn spiral until the game ends.

B.  Prayer

1.  What is prayer?

Prayer in Devacurse is the means by which you generate blessings.  Blessings constitute the raw spiritual power you use to summon soldiers and events.  Think of prayer like an electric generator.  You activate the generator to produce electricity (blessings).  Turning on a light bulb will require a little electricity, running an air conditioner will require a lot.  Just so, using a minor incantation will require only a few blessings, while casting a very powerful one will require a lot.

Generally speaking, the more blessings you can generate, the more you will be able to accomplish.

2.  How do I set up a prayer card?

Any card except a hero card may be used for prayer.  

A player creates a prayer card by putting any non-hero card from their hand into their temple zone.  Players may place no more than one prayer card in their temple zone per turn spiral.  

The open (face up) card on the left can generate 1 earth or unaligned blessing. The closed (face down) card on the right can only generate one unaligned blessing.

Cards may be put in the temple zone for prayer in two positions, each of which has different advantages:

a.  Open (face up)

To generate a single blessing, deplete (turn horizontal) one vertical prayer card.  An open prayer card may generate either one unaligned blessing or one blessing of the same elemental alignment as the card (fire, water, wind, etc..)

b.  Closed (face down)

To generate a single blessing, deplete (turn horizontal) one vertical prayer card.  A closed prayer card can only generate one unaligned blessing. 

Here, a player depletes (rotates horizontal) three prayer cards (shown in the black band at bottom) in their temple zone to generate one unaligned blessing and two earth blessings. These blessings pay the cost of the closed prayer card, a soldier card, flipping the card face up and calling it into active play. The summoned soldier is immediately placed in the battlefield. It can no longer function as a closed prayer card.

Closed prayer cards in the prompt (vertical) position have an additional function:  they may be called into play.  To call a closed prayer card into play, simply pay its blessing cost as you would for a card in your hand (see the forthcoming second column on the turn spiral for a discussion of calling cards into play).  

Closed prayer cards in the depleted (horizontal) position may not be used in this way.

Closed prayer cards effectively permit you to expand your card options beyond the 7 cards in your hand.  However, using a closed prayer card in this way also removes it from the temple zone, so it will not be there to generate blessings for you in future turn spirals.

3.  Sacrificing prayer cards

Prayer cards typically generate only one blessing, but players can generate an additional blessing from a depleted prayer by “sacrificing” it, i.e., by discarding it to the cenotaph pile.  

So a single prayer card can generate 2 blessings if it is sacrificed, but your ability to generate blessings will be reduced during the following turn spiral by its absence. 

Players may sacrifice as many prayer cards as they have at any time in the game.   

Tactically, sacrifice is a double-edged sword, providing a short-term boost at the cost of future potential:  use it wisely.

Our first artist spotlight column focuses on Sarit Chareonpanichkul, art director for Gandharvas Studios.  Although not a member of the original game design team, Sarit’s impact has been so profound that he is accounted one of the “Six Devabrothers” or six founding fathers of Devacurse.  As an artist, Sarit is gifted with a vivid imagination, a sharp eye for composition, and a precocious dedication to craft.

But what separates the 25 year old artist most from other young talents is his passionate streak of cultural nationalism.  An unabashed admirer of the Thai linear style showcased in the phantasmagoric Ramayana murals of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, Sarit seeks to revitalize and update it for modern audiences.  The results are beguiling:  Devacurse sports a look as elegant as it is pyrotechnic, infusing the power of contemporary fantasy illustration with a distinctly Thai grace.  

Read on to learn more about Sarit and to see his work, including full color digital paintings and several previously unpublished sketches.

Sarit got an early start as an artist, educated and encouraged by his father Somchai and mother Suwannee, both art teachers.  He later attended Buriram Rajabhat University in Buriram, Isaan (northeast Thailand) and studied art there with mentor Sujin Sangwanmaneeneth, whom he credits along with his parents as being his primary influence.  Sarit has supplemented his professional training with a good deal of self-education, using art books to learn and refine his digital skills.  Sarit typically works on a single card image for an entire week, a dedication to quality that is all too rare in the often slapdash world of photoshop artists.  He typically sketches each card image in fine detail before scanning it into the computer, revising, and adding color and other effects.  To compare several of Sarit’s sketches with the final digital paintings, scroll down to the end of this article.  

Sarit’s dedication and considerable investment of time into every work has clearly paid off.  After a scant two years of experience painting digitally he is already producing professional quality work.

Sarit’s artwork has clear Asian pop influences.  His men have the lithe bodies, stark musculature, and exaggerated hairstyles familiar to readers of Japanese manga or Chinese manhua, and as his illustrations for the Devacurse rulebook show, he has not only studied but mastered the lessons of these East Asian comics.  If he wished I’m convinced Sarit could make a solid career out of being a comicbook illustrator.

But his card illustrations replace the manic energy of comics with a subdued and lyric grace.  Indeed, Sarit seems to have a taste for languid beauty that saturates everything he does.  Consider the curvilinear quietude he invests in this depiction of a warrior in spiked armor, for example.  The concept evokes rough brutality but Sarit’s inventive cresting wave composition suggests repose and latent power.

Not all of Sarit’s work evokes Asian sources:  the brooding color palette Sarit favors is more suggestive of Magic the Gathering illustrations than the bright stylings of East Asian pop culture.  His smoldering rendition of Maruto the fire demon from the Vengeful Kindred expansion, for example, is rich with dark atmosphere.

While Sarit has learned from East Asian and Western examples, however, he finds the prevailing trend to simply ape these styles boring.  Sarit’s true passion and aesthetic allegiance is for the art of his homeland.  Specifically, Sarit has a love for the style he calls “Thai Line”, which emphasizes linear grace and elegant patterns.  He cites the dynamic battle scenes from the Ramayana murals of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha as primary examples of this style, as well as the work of modern Thai artist Chaleamchai.

Here the white monkey Hanuman leads a charge of monkey warriors against Ravana's demon troops. Sarit particularly enjoys the character of Hanuman, who served as a model for his rendition of Devacurse character Tuwalo (below).

Sarit’s ambition is to update this Thai visual style for modern audiences, partially by blending it with Western and Japanese elements.  This is an effective way of reaching Thai players, as many younger Thais feel disassociated from their traditional arts.  Sarit is optimistic that by blending Thai styles with other popular styles, he can get Thai young people excited about their own artistic heritage.  Devacurse is a private venture, but Gandharvas Studios has more than profit in mind:  they also have a sincere interest in inspiring cultural pride in Thai patrimony.  

But the dreams of Sarit and Gandharvas Studios don’t stop at Thailand’s borders.  Sarit’s vision is to take the Thai art style of the Ramayana murals global through Devacurse, so that players in foreign lands also become conversant with Thai visual culture.  It’s an inventive idea, taking an artistic vision from static murals and translating it into mobile cards, then circulating them through the world’s commercial bloodstream.

For all his accomplishments, what excites me most about Sarit is his potential.  If he’s already producing work this good at age 25, I can’t wait to see what he’s doing at 35.  And if the visually impressive Vengeful Kindred expansion is any indication, Sarit’s director’s eye for quality is only getting sharper.  With his innate talent, graceful style, and drive to improve, I expect great things from Sarit in the coming years.  And with this art director in charge, I expect Devacurse will become ever more spectacular as it brings its uniquely Thai vision to the world.

This post is the second in a series explaining the various card types of the Devacurse collectable card game.  Today event cards go under the microscope.  These cards harness the powers of advanced technology and mystical power to augment your forces or decimate those of your opponent.

Read on to learn how to wield the powers of science and sorcery!

Event cards come in two varieties:  incantations and inventions.

Incantations:

Incantations harness the forces of magic.  Incantations can only be played during the acting player’s turn during the Construction loop (phase), unless they are marked with a flash symbol, in which case they can be played at any time – even during an opponent’s turn.  Flash incantations therefore carry a powerful element of surprise that can be turned to great strategic effect.

The blessing cost is in the upper left-hand corner. 

A number value indicates a blessing cost that can be paid with either unaligned blessing points or blessing points of any elemental alignment. 

Elemental symbols indicate blessing point costs that must be paid for with blessings of matching elemental alignment.

Example:  This card has a 2, which can be paid with blessings or any or no elemental alignment, and one metal icon, which can only be paid with one metal blessing.  Both costs must be paid to activate this incantation. 

  Name:  

The name of the incantation is along the upper right border.  This card’s name is Asateehun.

 Set Icon:  

This symbol in the upper right-hand corner shows the set this card was published in.  Asateehun was published in the Half Blood Deal base set.

The set icon also indicates the rarity of the card for collectors.  Gold = rare, Silver = uncommon, and Bronze (red) = common.  Asateehun’s bronze set icon indicates it is common.

  Subtype and Event symbol:  

The event subtype and event symbol are displayed below the artwork.  This event has the subtype “Magic” and the incantation symbol.  

  Effect:  

The text below the subtype bar describes what effect this event has on the game when a Deva uses it.

Asateehun’s effect is to destroy one target enemy soldier card.

  Incantation symbol:  

The symbol found in the lower left-hand corner of an event card identifies it as either an incantation or an invention.  Asateehun has the spell ball symbol indicating it is an incantation.

Some incantations have an exclamation point over the spell ball icon.  These “Flash” incantations can be played at any time, even during an opponent’s turn.

Inventions:

Where incantations have an immediate effect, inventions tend to be more preparative, enhancing your forces and enabling new tactics using the power of technology.  Many inventions are special weapons or pieces of equipment you can use to outfit your soldiers and heroes.  Other inventions are locations that confer special abilities or enhancements to your campaign.  Inventions can only be played during the acting player’s turn during the Construction loop (phase).

  Flavor text:

The last line of text describes the unit or character’s role in the fictional world of Devacurse.

  Invention symbol:  

The symbol found in the lower left-hand corner of an event card identifies it as either an incantation or an invention.  Pakkinichakuha has the turning gears symbol indicating it is an invention.

Some inventions, like this one, have a number value printed on top of the gear symbol.  This number is a turn counter, indicating that once activated, the effect lasts for this number of turn spirals (rounds).  

Once activated, Pakkinichakuha’s special effect lasts two turn spirals.

Discarding Events:

Both incantations and inventions are ultimately discarded to the cenotaph pile, so just as with vanquished soldier cards, event cards can be recycled to summon heroes.

Incantation events are discarded to the cenotaph pile as soon as they are used.

Invention events are equipped to soldiers, heroes, or placed on the table.  They are discarded to the cenotaph pile when they are destroyed.

This post is the first in a series that explains each Devacurse card type and how it is used in the game.

Today we look at the central players of Devacurse:  the Soldiers and Heroes ready to fight to the death for their Devas.

Soldier Cards:

Soldier cards represent the grunts or foot-soldiers of Devacurse. Soldier cards have the following characteristics:

  Name: 

The name of the unit is in the upper right-hand corner.  This card’s name, KongAkkee, means “The Flame Guard”.

  Set icon:

This symbol in the upper right-hand corner shows the set this card was published in.  The Flame Guard was published in the Half Blood Deal base set.

The set icon also indicates the rarity of the card for collectors.  Gold = rare, Silver = uncommon, and Bronze (red) = common.  KongAkkee’s bronze set icon indicates it is common.

  Blessing cost: 

The blessing cost is in the upper left-hand corner. 

A number value indicates a blessing cost that can be paid with either unaligned blessing points or blessing points of any elemental alignment. 

Elemental symbols indicate blessing point costs that must be paid for with blessings of matching elemental alignment.

Example:  This card has a 1, which can be paid with any color of blessing, and one fire icon, which can only be paid with one fire blessing.  Both costs must be paid to summon this card. 

  Subtype: 

The text immediately below the card illustration indicates the unit’s subtype.  This unit belongs to the “human soldier” subtype.

  Pronunciation: 

The next line of text lists the unit’s name in Thai, then in English.

  Skills and abilities: 

The next line of text describes the unit’s special powers and capabilities (in Thai), which can be used to affect the outcome of a battle.  Skills and abilities include burn, windwalk, pierce, poison, field, revive.  See the Skills and Abilities section for more information.

Flavor text: 

The last line of text describes the unit or character’s role in the fictional world of Devacurse.  Some cards, like this one, do not have flavor text.

  Attack Strength: 

The number inside the bladed circle on the lower left corner indicates the card’s attack strength.  The higher the number, the more powerful the card.

  Defense: 

The number inside the smooth shield circle on the lower right-hand corner indicates the card’s defense value.  The higher the number, the better this card can withstand attacks.

Hero Cards:

Hero cards represent the legendary figures of the Devacurse universe.  Heroes are avatars of their controlling Devas, incarnating their will and intellect, and bringing a measure of their power to the battlefield.  Heroes are powerful agents that can shift the tides of battle, but they come at a significant price:  mystically bonded to his patron Deva, the death of a hero directly impacts the life force of his controlling deity.

Anatomy of a hero card

  Set icon:

This symbol in the upper right-hand corner shows the set this card was published in.  Irawat was published in the Half Blood Deal base set.

The set icon also indicates the rarity of the card for collectors.  Gold = rare, Silver = uncommon, and Bronze (red) = common.  Irawat’s Gold set icon indicates it is rare.

  Name: 

The name of the hero (in English) is found immediately below the character illustration. 

This hero’s name is Irawat.  Irawat is a central protagonist in the ongoing Devacurse saga.

  Subtype: 

The next line of text indicates the hero’s subtype.  Irawat’s subtype is “human hero”.

  Skill / Ability Level: 

Two centered bars of text list the hero’s skill and ability levels.  All Heroes have two levels of skill or ability.

Summoning heroes with Guardians

Unlike soldier and event cards, hero cards are not summoned using blessing points generated by prayer cards in the temple zone.  The hero summoning mechanic is one of Devacurse’s most innovative and fascinating, since it is indirectly flavored by the Thai Buddhist conception of reincarnation.  

Hero cards are summoned using the discarded (“dead”) soldier and event cards in the Cenotaph pile.  Any card from the Cenotaph that is used to summon a hero in this way is called a “guardian”.  Heroes are unique personalities in the Devacurse universe, so only one card of the same hero can be in play at any time.  Devas may summon different heroes at the same time, however – as many as they can pay for with the guardian points available in their cenotaphs.

Hero cards must be summoned using the guardian cost of their first skill / ability level, and can never enter play starting at level 2.  Irawat’s first skill level has a guardian cost of 2 cards of any or no elemental alignment, shown by the number 2, and 2 discarded earth cards, indicated by two earth symbols. 

All guardian cards used to summon a hero must be filed beneath that hero. 

Upgrading heroes

Heroes can be upgraded to their second Skill / Ability levels during their second Turn Spiral in the battlefield.  To upgrade a hero, pay the difference between the guardian cost of the first and second skill levels.  Irawat has an initial skill level of 2 unaligned guardian points and 2 earth-aligned guardian points, and a second skill level of 3 unaligned guardian points and 3 earth-aligned guardian points.  Therefore the controlling player must pay 1 unaligned guardian point and 1 earth-aligned guardian point to upgrade Irawat to his second skill level. 

Upgrading is cumulative: upgraded heroes possess the skills and abilities of both skill levels. 

  Attack Strength: 

As with soldier cards, the number inside the bladed circle on the lower left corner of the hero card indicates the character’s attack strength.  The higher the number, the more powerful the card, and the more damage it can inflict on an enemy soldier, hero, or Deva.

Irawat has a formidable attack strength of 3. 

The Death of a Hero

  Avatar Points: 

The number inside the Eye of the Deva in the lower right-hand corner, unlike the shield on soldier cards, does not indicate defense.  On hero cards this number stands for Avatar points, the life force of the hero.  If this number is reduced to zero, the hero dies and the hero card is discarded to the Black Hole pile.  Heroes sent to the Black Hole cannot be retrieved and are removed for the duration of the game.  However, players may summon and use a new card of the same hero if they have a duplicate in their hand. 

When a hero dies the guardian cards beneath him are also discarded.  Guardian cards that share the hero’s current elemental cost (for Irawat, Earth) follow him into the Black Hole.  Guardians of other or no elemental alignments are returned to the cenotaph.

Since the hero is an incarnation of the controlling Deva, his life force (Avatar Points) is linked to his patron deity’s, i.e. to the controlling player’s Faith Points.  When a hero dies, his maximum Avatar Point number is deducted from the controlling player’s faith points.

Example:  Irawat has four Avatar Points.  His controlling Deva has 24 Faith Points.  Irawat is slain in battle by the opposing Deva’s hero, Tuwalo.  Irawat’s controlling Deva loses 4 Faith Points (24 FP – 4 AP = 20 FP) and places Irawat into the Black Hole discard pile.  The guardian cards beneath Irawat are placed in the appropriate Black Hole (Earth) and Cenotaph (unaligned) discard piles.
